ON AKULE & HOW TO CATCH THEM
The Akule is the Hawaiin name for the big eyed scad or google eyed scad fish. The biggest recorded akule caught in Hawaii weighed 2.03 pounds and was caught on East Maui in 2003. The akule is one of the most favored fish to catch in Hawaii because of its great flavor. It can be served dried and salted or it can also be served baked, smoked or fried. Take your pick. I prefer smoked akule. (akule is also good for ulua bait) The akule travels in a school of fish so if you catch one there are plenty more in the area. Akules are caught in sandy bays and reefs. Akule fishing is a lot like fishing for crappie. If you are from the mainland and like crappie fishing you will love akule fishing. Akule's give up a pretty good fight for their size. There are several methods you can fish for akule. Whipping is one method of akule fishing a lot of people like. Another method that is liked is using a bobber and bait. Akule fishing is not very expensive and they are pretty easy to catch. In the right area you can catch one almost instantly every time you line hits the water. When akule fishing you need 20 Lb test or less fishing line, I prefer 15 Lb test. You can use a spincasting reel or any small fishing reel. A medium to light action pole. The best bait I have found for akule fishing is minnows, but not just any minnows, prepared minnows. The way you prepare your minnows is by pouring sea salt on them and letting them dry out a little bit. By doing this they are easier to keep on the hook and they still look almost the same as they were alive. The best time to catch akule is right before and after sunset. The method used to catch the most akule is get a lighted bobber put it about an arm and a half length away from your hook Make sure the light is on on your bobber (the light attracts the fish to your minnow) Put your dried minnow on your hook. Cast your pole. You should have a bite pretty quick if there are any hungry Akule in the area. EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED fishing reel fishing pole 15 to 20 Lb test line Lighted bobber extra hooks Bait (minnows) sea salt cooler of ice or bucket of water to put fish in air pump if you choose bucket of water lantern chair pole holder (if you get a chance to put your pole down) I suggest realeasing any akule you do not plan on eating for future generations of Hawaiin's to catch.
